My Journey as a Business Owner Living With Daily Challenges – Part 5: Redefining Success: What It Means to Me as a Business Owner

If you've been following my "My Journey as a Business Owner Living with Daily Challenges" series, welcome back. And if this is your first time joining me, I'm so glad you're here.

Over the past few months, I've shared why I started Party Your World, some of the challenges I've faced along the way, and how I've learned to adapt the way I work to suit my life.

This month, I want to talk about something I've been thinking about a lot lately:

What does success actually mean?

When you start a business, it's very easy to believe success has a particular look.

A certain number of followers.

A certain amount of revenue.

A busy calendar.

Lots of orders.

A growing team.

A business that everyone knows about.

Those things can absolutely be exciting milestones, and I'm not going to pretend they don't matter. Of course I want Party Your World to grow. I want customers to love our products, I want the business to be financially successful, and I have plenty of dreams for where I'd like to take it.

But I've realised that success means something much bigger to me than a number on a spreadsheet.

Success Looks Different When You Build Something from Scratch

Party Your World is still a very young business.

We launched in October 2025, so I'm still very much in the early stages of figuring things out, learning what works, making mistakes, trying again, and building the foundations for what I hope will become something much bigger.

There have been no overnight success stories.

And that's okay.

I'm learning to appreciate the small milestones because I know how much work sits behind them.

Launching the website was a milestone.

Creating my first products was a milestone.

Publishing my first blog was a milestone.

Seeing someone follow Party Your World for the first time was a milestone.

Having someone tell me they love the idea was a milestone.

Even sitting down and continuing to work on the business on a difficult day is a milestone.

When you're building something from scratch, progress doesn't always look dramatic.

Sometimes it looks like quietly showing up again.

Success Isn't Just About Sales

I'm incredibly excited for the day Party Your World receives its first order.

I know that moment will mean a lot to me.

But I've also realised that I don't want to measure the entire value of what I'm building by how quickly that happens.

There are so many things happening behind the scenes that don't show up in sales figures.

I'm learning about my customers.

I'm learning about content creation, marketing, websites, SEO and social media.

I'm learning how to make decisions when there isn't a clear answer.

I'm learning how to balance being creative with being practical.

I'm learning how to take an idea and turn it into something real.

And perhaps most importantly, I'm learning more about myself.

That learning is part of the journey too.

My Definition of Success

For me, success is having the courage to build something that matters to me.

It's creating a business that reflects my values.

It's using my experience in event management alongside the knowledge I've gained through completing my Bachelor of Commerce, majoring in Business Law, to create something of my own.

It's building a business that allows me to use my strengths while also recognising that I have limitations and daily challenges that need to be considered.

It's being able to say, "I created this."

It's having the freedom to dream about where Party Your World could go and then taking small, practical steps towards getting there.

And yes, eventually I would love to look back and see a thriving business with plenty of customers, exciting products and a community of families who genuinely love what we do.

But I don't want to wait until I reach that point to feel successful.

Learning to Celebrate the Progress

I think one of the easiest things to do when you're building a business is to focus on how far you still have to go.

There will always be another goal.

Another product.

Another follower milestone.

Another financial target.

Another thing to learn.

If I'm constantly looking at what's next, I could easily forget to appreciate where I am right now.

So I'm learning to celebrate the progress along the way.

The website being live.

The social media community slowly growing.

The ideas that are beginning to take shape.

The lessons I'm learning.

The confidence I've gained.

The fact that I started.

That last one might sound simple, but it isn't.

Starting something takes courage.

Continuing when things don't happen as quickly as you'd hoped takes even more.

Success on My Own Terms

Living with Cerebral Palsy has taught me that progress isn't always linear.

I've experienced this in my personal life, and I'm discovering the same thing in business.

Sometimes you take three steps forward and one step back.

Sometimes something that looks simple to someone else takes significantly more effort.

Sometimes you need to change your approach completely.

That doesn't mean you're failing.

It means you're adapting.

And I've become much more comfortable with that idea.

I don't need Party Your World to look like someone else's business to know that I'm making progress.

I don't need to follow someone else's timeline.

I don't need to define success according to someone else's expectations.

I can build this business at a pace that allows me to create something sustainable and meaningful.

Looking at the Bigger Picture

I have big dreams for Party Your World.

I'm not going to apologise for that.

I want to see this little business grow.

I want to help families make party planning easier.

I want Party Your World to become a brand people recognise and trust.

And I want to keep learning along the way.

But I'm also learning that having big ambitions doesn't mean I need to overlook the small wins.

Every business has to start somewhere.

Mine started with an idea.

Then came the planning.

Then the products.

Then the website.

Then the launch.

And now I'm here, still building.

Still learning.

Still dreaming.

Still showing up.

And maybe that's what success looks like for me right now.

Not having everything figured out.

Not having reached the finish line.

But being brave enough to keep moving towards it.

Here's to Defining Success for Yourself

If you're building something of your own, I hope you give yourself permission to define success in a way that actually means something to you.

Maybe success is your first customer.

Maybe it's finally launching the idea you've been thinking about for years.

Maybe it's making enough money to give you more freedom.

Maybe it's creating something that fits around your family.

Maybe it's simply having the courage to try.

Whatever success looks like for you, don't let someone else's timeline make you feel like you're behind.

Your journey is yours.

And I'm learning to remind myself of that too.

For me, Party Your World isn't successful because I've reached some imaginary finish line.

It's successful because I had a dream, I believed in it enough to start, and I'm still here building it.

And honestly?

I'm pretty proud of that. 💜
